Employment
NSW Rape Crisis Centre
considers sexual assault counselling to be specialist work. Counsellors
who work at the Centre must have a social work or psychology degree
or equivalent, at least two years counselling experience and a
detailed knowledge of the causes and consequences of sexual violence.
Counsellors participate in a detailed orientation program and
are expected to participate in a number of specific training programs
in the first year of their employment. Counsellors participate
in regular one to one supervision and meet regularly with the
Counselling team to discuss counselling issues.
The Centre holds an
exemption under the Anti-Discrimination Act and only employs female
counsellors.
Students
NSW Rape Crisis Centre
does not offer face to face counselling and as the telephone work
is specialist, students cannot take part in the counselling roster.
Students have found it useful to attend counsellor meetings where
counselling issues are discussed and the Centre welcomes students
for a 2 hour introduction to the Centre, it's services and practices.
This is most commonly offered to a group of students rather than
one student at a time.
Volunteer
Work
As stated
above sexual assault counselling is specialist work. Only experienced
trained professionals can respond to calls at NSW Rape Crisis
Centre. The Centre does not have work suitable for volunteers.
