Projects / Partnerships

As NSW Rape Crisis Centre is a state wide service the project work of the Centre focuses on work which will have state wide benefits.

Sexual Ethics

The Sexual Ethics project is a research project working to understand how young people make decisions about sexual intimacy and aims to encourage ethical sexual practices.

The project is in partnership with Professor Moira Carmody from the University of Western Sydney and has been funded by the Australian Research Council.

By understanding how decisions about sex are made we can then work to encourage ethical sexual practices and decrease the incidence of sexual assault.

Criminal Justice Sexual Offences Task Force

In December 2004, as a result of representations by NSW Rape Crisis Centre and Dr Anne Cossins from the Law Faculty of the University of NSW, the NSW Attorney General The Honourable Bob Debus established the Criminal Justice Sexual Offences Task Force. The Task Force met for 12 months and reported to the Attorney General in December 2005. The Task Force was charged with:

  1. Evaluate models for the prosecution of sexual assault offences.
  2. Evaluate proposals for legislative and procedural change in the area of sexual assault prosecutions in NSW.
  3. Identification of areas of possible reform in relation to the provision of services for sexual assault victims.

The Attorney General is reviewing the Taskforce recommendations and an announcement is expected in the near future. To read the report click here. (PDF 1.5MB)

NRL

The National Rugby League has embarked on a process of training and cultural change aimed at encouraging positive attitudes and behaviours toward women at all levels of its organisation. This is the first time in Australia that a large male dominated organisation has taken this step and backed up their position with money and resources. They invited NSW Rape Crisis Centre to participate in the work and the Centre is involved in on-going training and consultation to the NRL.

Churchill Fellowship

The Manager of NSW Rape Crisis Centre was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2005. She travelled to South Africa, the USA and Canada to review the criminal justice system’s management of complaints of sexual assault and support service for victims in those countries.
