What we Offer

Whether sexual assault happened recently, a while ago or in childhood, experienced and professional sexual assault counsellors are available by telephone or online.

Telephone Service

  • Assistance with safety, containing emotions and making plans.
  • Help with managing the impacts of sexual assault including fear, shock, disbelief, flashbacks, nightmares, shame, guilt, powerlessness, disorientation, extreme caution, anger, finding it hard to concentrate, depression, anxiety, panic attacks and self injury.
  • Information about and referral to:
    • Police,
    • Sexual assault counsellors, and
    • where the assault was recent, medical help, STD and pregnancy checks and forensic examinations.
  • Generally people ring the Centre two to three times and then make contact with a person to person service in their local area. For some, where such services are not available or there are other difficulties, NSW Rape Crisis Centre can offer short term, goal orientated support.

Rape Crisis Online

Where making the first contact by telephone is too hard assistance is available online, in real time and person to person. Counsellors online can provide basic support and information on:

  • sexual assault and its impacts,
  • rights and options for someone who has been sexually assaulted,
  • referral to other services that can help, and
  • encouragement to overcome barriers and make telephone or person to person contact.

NSW Rape Crisis Centre Counsellors can also help:

Supporters, personal or professional, of someone who has been sexually assaulted with:

  • information on where help is available,
  • assistance in understanding the persons reactions,
  • strategies for helping the person deal with the trauma of sexual assault, and
  • help for the supporter in dealing with their own emotions.

Practitioners counselling someone who has been sexually assaulted with:

  • developing plans and strategies to address sexual assault matters,
  • out of hours or annual leave telephone support in consultation with the counsellor and their client.
