It
is every person’s human right to a life free of violence and
when violence occurs, it is their right to receive compassionate
professional assistance in their recovery. The NSW Rape Crisis Centre
aims to be a Centre of excellence in the provision of services to
anyone who has experienced sexual violence.
The Best
Practice Manual for Specialised Sexual Assault Telephone and Online
Counselling, 2nd Edition guides and informs the work of the
NSW Rape Crisis Centre Counsellors and similar professionals so
that these rights may be upheld and this aim achieved.
The manual incorporates
a feminist framework and adopts a feminist analysis of sexual assault.
The impacts of trauma are discussed and resultant mental health
concerns are conceptualised within a trauma model, an alternative
model to that often presented within the medically oriented mental
health field.
The manual contains
sections on:
- Policy
and Practice – a comprehensive explanation on the
rationale, policies and procedures of the Centre;
- Sexual
Assault and Trauma – information on the incidence,
prevalence and impacts of sexual assault is given to provide the
reader with the necessary foundations to inform effective intervention
in this area;
- Telephone

effectiveness of telephone counselling and recommendations for
the provision of services to people who have experienced sexual
assault are provided;

to facilitate its use in a client group of sexual assault survivors;
